Understanding XP (Xeroderma Pigmentosum)

Amy and Friends are proud to announce that as of 1st April 2026 we are now supporting children, young people, and their families who have a diagnosis of Xeroderma Pigmentosum. XP is a rare genetic condition that affects the body’s ability to repair damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) light. This means that even small amounts of sunlight can cause serious harm to the skin and eyes.

XP is caused by a variation in the genes responsible for repairing damaged DNA. In people without XP, the body naturally fixes damage caused by UV rays. However, in those with XP, this repair process does not work properly, leading to a much higher risk of skin damage and skin cancers from a very young age.

Living with XP

For individuals with XP, everyday exposure to sunlight must be carefully managed. This often includes:

  • Wearing full protective clothing, hats, and UV-protective face shields
  • Applying high-factor sunscreen regularly
  • Using UV-protective film on windows at home and in cars
  • Avoiding outdoor activities during daylight hours
  • Many families adapt their routines to ensure safety, with activities often taking place in the evening or in controlled indoor environments.

Health Impacts

XP can affect people in different ways, but common challenges include:

  • Severe sunburn after minimal sun exposure
  • Freckling and skin changes at an early age
  • A significantly increased risk of skin cancer
  • Eye sensitivity and potential vision problems.
  • Some individuals may also experience neurological complications, depending on the type of XP.
